Auroville Bakery and Cafés: Where to Eat in Auroville

By seven in the morning, the smell reaches the road before the sign does. Warm butter, dark crust, something with cardamom in it. On the Auroville Main Road near Kuilapalayam, cyclists are already leaning their bikes against the wall, and the first tray of croissants is coming out. By mid-morning, the best of the pastries will be gone.

That's the Auroville Bakery, and for a lot of people it's the unofficial start of any day in Auroville. The croissants were taught to the bakery by a visiting French baker years ago, and they're still its best-selling item. Some people drive up from Pondicherry just for their weekend supply.

But eating in Auroville is a little different from eating anywhere else, and a few of its best-known kitchens aren't set up for day visitors at all. Here's where you can actually eat, when, and what to know before you go hungry.

Before you go

  • Auroville Bakery: open daily except Sundays, 6.30 am to 5.30 pm. Hot croissants from 7 am.
  • Where: by Douceur on the Auroville Main Road, opposite Farm Fresh, near Kuilapalayam village.
  • Easiest lunch for day visitors: the cafés at the Visitors Centre, open from 8 am.
  • Farm lunch: Solitude Farm's café, Monday to Saturday, lunch 12.30 to 3.30 pm.
  • Watch out: Solar Kitchen, La Terrace and Ganesh Bakery take payment by Aurocard or Auroville account only.
  • Sundays: the Bakery and Solitude Farm are both closed. Plan around it.

What makes Auroville Bakery special?

It's not fancy. It's a working bakery that grew up with the community, and it's run mostly by young Aurovilians today. What it has is range and habit. People have been coming here for bread and pastries for decades, and the bakery's own story is full of the names of bakers who passed through and taught it something new.

The day has two halves:

  • Mornings: hot croissants from 7 am, plus buns, baguettes, biscuits, pizza, quiche, vegetable tarts, pies and rolls.
  • Afternoons: breads, pastries and cakes.

Look out for the cakes with European names you might not expect in Tamil Nadu, like Tosca and Mazariner, alongside lemon and chocolate cakes, fruit tartlets, brioches and every kind of cookie. If croissants are the point of your visit, come early. A mid-afternoon stop is better for a loaf and a slice of cake to take back with you.

What are the Auroville Bakery timings?

The bakery is open 6.30 am to 5.30 pm, every day except Sunday. The croissants come out hot from 7 am. There's no Sunday baking, so if Sunday is your only free day, stock up on Saturday.

It's on the Auroville Main Road near Kuilapalayam village, by the Douceur settlement and opposite Farm Fresh. It's easy to fold into a trip: stop on the way in for breakfast, or on the way out for bread to take home.

Where can day visitors eat in Auroville?

The simplest answer is the Visitors Centre. It's where you'll start anyway, to get your free pass for the Matrimandir Viewing Point, and it has cafés and a food court that are set up for visitors.

  • Right Path Café: open 8 am to 9 pm daily, closing at 5 pm on Mondays. Free drinking water is available here too.
  • Dreamers' Café: a café built in an upcycled shipping container, right at the heart of the Visitors Centre, with outdoor seating. It serves desserts, croissants and shakes, and takes digital payments. It opens at 8 am; closing time varies by season, and it closes early on Mondays.

A good rhythm for a first visit: pass and video in the morning, the walk to the Viewing Point, then back to the Visitors Centre for a long, shaded lunch before the afternoon heat.

Is Solitude Farm worth the trip?

If you care where your food comes from, yes. Solitude Farm is a working organic farm near Kuilapalayam, and its café serves what grows around it. The farm grows fruit, vegetables, greens, flowers and millets, and the main meal is the Thali of the Day, built from whatever fresh, seasonal produce is ready.

  • Open: Monday to Saturday. Strictly closed on Sunday.
  • Breakfast: 9 to 11 am.
  • Lunch: 12.30 to 3.30 pm.
  • Also on the menu: juices, vegan smoothies, ice cream and desserts made at the café.

On Saturdays, the farm runs a free farm tour at 11.30 am, an hour spent learning where your food comes from, followed by lunch at the café. If you're joining the tour, book your lunch in advance. It's one of the best-value mornings in Auroville.

Can visitors eat at the Solar Kitchen?

This is the question that trips people up. The Solar Kitchen is Auroville's community dining hall. It cooks simple vegetarian food for over 1,000 lunches a day, many of them for schools. Lunch runs from 12.15 to 1.15 pm, and guests are asked to book in advance; without a booking, you wait until 1 pm.

But payment is by Aurocard or Auroville account only. The same goes for La Terrace Café upstairs and for Ganesh Bakery. The Aurocard is a smart card for registered guests staying in Auroville for at least a month or two, issued at the Financial Service offices and major guest houses. A day visitor won't have one.

So, for most short-stay travellers, these are places to know about, not places to plan lunch around. If you're staying longer at an Auroville guest house, ask about an Aurocard on arrival and they open up:

  • La Terrace Café: directly above the Solar Kitchen, under the branches of a huge tree. Open daily except Thursdays, 8 am to 8 pm. Known for red rice idlis and dosais, and croissants at breakfast. Pizza is on Sundays only.
  • Ganesh Bakery & Café: one of Auroville's oldest bakeries, in the Industrial Zone near Kottakarai, started in 1994. Open daily, 7.30 am to 8.30 pm. It bakes organic breads, cakes and wheat-free cookies and breads as far as it can, and it trains young people from the villages in baking.

How do you plan a food day in Auroville?

Auroville is spread out across farms, forests and settlements, so a little planning saves a lot of backtracking in the heat. Here's a day that works, Monday to Saturday:

  1. 7 am: croissants at the Auroville Bakery, near Kuilapalayam.
  2. 9 am: the Visitors Centre, for the video and your free Viewing Point pass.
  3. Late morning: the walk to the Matrimandir Viewing Point and back.
  4. Lunch: a thali at Solitude Farm, or a long lunch at the Visitors Centre cafés.
  5. Afternoon: back to the Bakery for bread and cake before 5.30 pm, then head home.

Night falls quickly in Auroville, around 6.30 to 7 pm, and the back roads are dark. Plan to finish your café trail before sunset.

Where to stay near Auroville's bakeries and cafés

The best thing about Auroville's food is that it rewards repeat visits. The croissants are best at seven. Solitude only does its tour on a Saturday. The Bakery closes on Sunday. You'll enjoy it most if you're close enough to come back more than once.

Wind & Wave Villas is at Chettikuppam, in a quiet, gated coastal community, about 30 minutes from Auroville and from Pondicherry town. The beach is a 700 m walk from the gate. Early croissants, a lazy afternoon in the pool, and a quiet evening are all easy from here.

  • 21 stays: eight two-bedroom rooms sleeping six, and 13 villas.
  • Kitchens in seven of the stays. Bring back a loaf and a cake from the Bakery and make breakfast your own.
  • Five 3BHK villas with their own private pool, each sleeping up to 10. See the private pool villas.
  • A large common pool for the stays without a private one.
  • Free parking, Wi-Fi, air conditioning and generator backup.
