Best Time to Visit Pondicherry: Month-by-Month Weather Guide (2026)

At six on a January morning, the air on this coast feels almost cool. You walk out of the gate at Wind & Wave and down to the sand with a light shirt on, the sky goes pink over the Bay of Bengal, and the sun climbs straight out of the sea in front of you. By nine you are in town with a coffee, and the streets of the French Quarter are bright, dry and easy to walk.

Come back in late November and it's another place. Warm rain drums on the roof, the palms are glossy green, and the sea runs grey and restless. Both trips can be good. But they are not the same trip, and most guides blur the difference.

We keep them separate. It uses the India Meteorological Department's long-term averages for Puducherry, so you can see exactly what each month tends to bring and pick the one that suits you.

Before you go

  • Best months overall: November to March, as the official tourism guidance says.
  • Driest months: January to April, with barely a day or so of rain each month on average.
  • Wettest months: October, November and December. About three-fifths of the year's rain falls in these three months.
  • Hottest months: May and June, with average highs around 37°C.
  • Coolest month: January for nights, December for days.
  • Every month: the sun rises over the sea, so early mornings are always the best part of the day.

What is the best time to visit Pondicherry?

November to March is the official answer, and it's a good one. These are the coolest months of the year. But if you want dry weather as well as cool weather, narrow it down: January to March is the sweet spot. Rain almost disappears, the average high stays between about 30°C and 33°C, and nights drop to around 21°C to 24°C.

November and December are cool too, but they are also the heart of the northeast monsoon on this coast. That's the part people miss. If you book for November expecting dry winter sunshine, you may spend a lot of it indoors.

What is the weather in Pondicherry month by month?

These are long-term averages for Puducherry from the India Meteorological Department (1991 to 2020). Any given year can be wetter, drier or hotter, but this is the pattern to plan around.

  • January: highs around 30°C, lows around 21°C. About 18 mm of rain, on roughly one day. The coolest nights of the year, and our pick for a first visit.
  • February: highs around 31°C, lows around 21°C. About 17 mm of rain, often none at all. Dry, clear and comfortable.
  • March: highs around 33°C, lows around 24°C. About 19 mm of rain. Still dry, but the afternoons start to bite.
  • April: highs around 34°C, lows around 26°C. About 21 mm of rain. Hot and dry. Mornings and evenings only.
  • May: highs around 37°C, lows around 27°C. About 67 mm of rain, from the odd thunderstorm. One of the two hottest months.
  • June: highs around 37°C, lows around 27°C. About 59 mm of rain. The highest average daytime temperature of the year.
  • July: highs around 36°C, lows around 26°C. About 75 mm of rain on roughly five days. Still hot, with more cloud.
  • August: highs around 35°C, lows around 26°C. About 135 mm of rain on six or seven days. Showers become a regular thing.
  • September: highs around 34°C, lows around 25°C. About 134 mm of rain on six or seven days. Similar to August.
  • October: highs around 33°C, lows around 24°C. About 260 mm of rain on roughly eleven days. The northeast monsoon arrives.
  • November: highs around 31°C, lows around 23°C. About 347 mm of rain on roughly eleven days. The wettest month of the year by a distance.
  • December: highs around 30°C, lows around 21°C. About 248 mm of rain on roughly six days. The coolest days of the year.

For context, Puducherry gets about 1,400 mm of rain in an average year. November alone brings about a quarter of it.

What is the worst time to visit Pondicherry?

It depends what you're trying to avoid.

  • If you hate heat, skip May and June. Average highs sit around 37°C, and even the nights stay warm. Sightseeing in the middle of the day is hard work.
  • If you hate rain, skip October and November. They average around eleven rainy days each, and heavy spells can disrupt plans.
  • If you need Auroville on a fixed day, be careful in the monsoon. The Matrimandir closes to visitors on rainy days, and there's no guarantee it will reopen the next morning.

The northeast monsoon is also when cyclones in the Bay of Bengal can reach this coast. In late November 2024, Cyclone Fengal crossed the coast close to Puducherry. That's not a reason to avoid the season entirely, but it is a reason to watch the forecast, keep your plans flexible, and choose a stay that copes well with bad weather. More on that below.

Is April a good time to visit Pondicherry?

It can be, if you plan for the heat. April is one of the driest months, so you rarely lose a day to rain. But average highs are around 34°C and nights stay around 26°C, so the rhythm changes. You're out at sunrise, back by late morning, in the pool through the afternoon, and out again once the sun drops. Night falls here at around 6.30 to 7 pm, so evenings are short.

That rhythm is much easier if your base has a pool and you're not stuck in a hot town centre at 2 pm. It's one of the reasons guests who come outside the winter season choose Wind & Wave, up the coast: the afternoon is spent in the water, not in traffic.

Is December a good time to visit Pondicherry?

Yes, with one caveat. December has the coolest daytime temperatures of the year, with highs around 30°C and lows around 21°C. Christmas and New Year bring a festive buzz to the town, with midnight Mass in the old churches and big crowds on Beach Road to see the year in. But December is still part of the monsoon, averaging about 248 mm of rain over six or so days.

Our advice: build a spare day into your trip for rain, keep the Matrimandir visit flexible, and book early for the Christmas to New Year week, when demand is at its peak.

When should you go, depending on who you're travelling with?

  • Couples: January and February. Cool, dry mornings, quiet walks along the Promenade, and long sunrises on the sand.
  • Families with children: December holidays or January to March. Avoid the May and June heat, which is hard on small children.
  • Friends and big groups: late December into early January if you want a buzz, February if you want the same weather for less of a crowd.
  • Beach lovers: January to March, well clear of the monsoon. The Promenade in town is rock-lined and made for walking, not swimming. For sand, take the boat from Chunnambar to Paradise Beach. A standard ticket is ₹300 per adult and ₹150 per child.
  • Rain lovers: July to September. Hot, but with passing showers rather than the heavy monsoon of late autumn.

Is Pondicherry better than Goa?

It's different, and Puducherry's own tourism department says so plainly: if you come expecting a Goa-like place, you're likely to be disappointed. Pondicherry doesn't have Goa's commercial tourist infrastructure. What it has instead is a walkable French Quarter, the Sri Aurobindo Ashram, Auroville, and a long, quiet coastline. It's a place to slow down, not to party until dawn.

If that sounds like your kind of trip, the best time to visit Pondicherry is when you can enjoy it slowly, and that usually means January to March.

Where to stay near Pondicherry, whatever the season

Every season here rewards the same habit: be up early, rest through the middle of the day, go out again in the evening. That's easy to say and hard to do if your hotel is in the middle of town and your best moment of the day is a sunrise 30 minutes away.

Where to stay near Pondicherry, whatever the season for Best Time to Visit Pondicherry: Month-by-Month Weather Guide (2026)

Wind & Wave Villas is built around that rhythm. It sits in a quiet, gated coastal community at Chettikuppam, north of Pondicherry, with the beach a 700 m walk from the gate. Pondicherry town and Auroville are each about 30 minutes' drive away.

  • In the dry season, your sunrise is a stroll, not an alarm and a taxi.
  • In the heat, the afternoon is for the pool. Five 3BHK villas have their own private swimming pool, and every other stay shares a large common pool. See the private pool villas.
  • In the monsoon, generator power backup, air conditioning and ceiling fans matter more than anything. Seven of the stays have a kitchen, so a rainy evening doesn't mean a drive out for dinner.
  • For groups, the 3BHK private-pool villas sleep up to 10, and each two-bedroom room sleeps 6. See group and family stays.

There's free parking on site, dinner outdoors in most stays, and self check-in when you arrive. See all 21 stays and book your dates, or WhatsApp us on +91 74015 26709 and tell us your dates. We'll tell you honestly what the weather is likely to be.
