Mangrove Forest Pondicherry: A Boat Ride Through the Backwaters (2026)

The engine drops to a murmur, and the town disappears. One minute you are pulling away from a busy boarding point on the edge of Pondicherry. The next, the water narrows, the roots close in on both sides, and the only sounds are the boat and the birds. The mangroves grow right out of the water here: dark, tangled, patient, the kind of green you don't expect to find so close to a French café.

Most visitors to Pondicherry never see this side of it. They walk the Promenade, drink a coffee in White Town, and head for the beaches. But behind the town, where the backwaters meet the sea, there is a quieter world that takes about an hour to explore by boat, and it's one of the best things you can do here with a family or a group of friends.

Here's how to see it, what the ride covers, and how to make it part of an easy day.

Before you go

  • How: by boat. The main mangrove ride boards at the Expo Ground boarding point at New Port, Uppalam, in Pondicherry.
  • How long: about one hour, covering the mangrove forest, Arikamedu, the fishing harbour and the river mouth.
  • Cost: the operator lists the mangrove ride from ₹799 per person, up to 10 people per boat. A private boat starts from ₹3,500.
  • Safety: life jackets in all sizes are provided.
  • Best time of year: November to March.
  • Best time of day: early, before the heat and the midday glare.

Where is the mangrove forest in Pondicherry?

The mangroves grow along the backwaters on the edge of town, where the river channels open out towards the sea. You can't really walk into them. The roots grow in the water and the mud, and the forest is best seen the way the fishermen see it: from a boat, gliding slowly through the channels.

The most straightforward way in is a guided boat ride. One local operator, Pondy Kings Boating, runs its mangrove trips from the Expo Ground boarding point at New Port in Uppalam. Its one-hour route takes in four stops in one loop: the mangrove forest itself, the old trading site of Arikamedu, the working fishing harbour, and the river mouth, where the backwater meets the Bay of Bengal.

Protecting these mangroves is part of the Puducherry government's Forest Department work, and it's worth treating them that way: quietly, and without leaving anything behind.

What will you see on the boat ride?

Think of it as four short chapters in one hour.

Boat moving through narrow mangrove channel with tangled roots and green canopy light.

The mangroves. The boat slows and the channels narrow. Mangrove roots rise out of the water like a knotted fence, and the light goes soft and green underneath the canopy. This is the part everyone talks about afterwards. Keep your voice low and let the quiet settle in.

Arikamedu. On the riverbank sits one of the most surprising places in South India. Arikamedu was an Indo-Roman trading port and one of the earliest bead-making centres in the region, trading with the Roman world from around two thousand years ago. From the water it looks like an ordinary riverbank. That's exactly what makes it memorable: history hiding in plain sight.

The fishing harbour. Colour and noise return. Boats painted in bright blues and reds, nets drying, the working life of the coast carrying on around you. Children usually love this part most.

The river mouth. Finally the backwater opens out and meets the sea. On a calm morning the light over the water here is beautiful. On a rough day, you'll feel the swell, so hold on and enjoy it.

How much does a mangrove boat ride cost?

Prices are set by the operator, and these are the figures it listed at the time of writing. They may change, so confirm when you book.

  • Mangrove boat ride: from ₹799 per person, with up to 10 people per boat.
  • Private charter: from ₹3,500 for the boat, for 6 to 20 guests depending on the boat, with a route you can customise. For a bigger family or a group of friends, this can work out well per head.
  • Shared ride: from ₹399 per person, in a shared boat of 12 to 15.

Every ride includes life jackets in all sizes, a first aid kit on board and a certified captain. The operator also offers a free reschedule if the weather turns. You can book online.

Is it good for children and families?

Yes. It's one of the easiest family outings around Pondicherry. The ride is short enough to hold a child's attention, there's a real sense of adventure in the narrow channels, and the life jackets come in all sizes. The fishing harbour and the river mouth give everyone something to point at.

A few tips from experience with families on trips like this:

  • Go early. The morning is cooler and calmer, and the light is better for photos.
  • Bring water, hats and sunscreen. There's little shade out on the open water.
  • Keep hands inside the boat, especially in the narrow channels.
  • Book a private boat for a big group. It keeps everyone together and lets you set the pace.

What about Pichavaram, the big mangrove forest?

If the Pondicherry ride leaves you wanting more, there's a much larger mangrove forest further south along the coast at Pichavaram, in Tamil Nadu's Cuddalore district. It covers about 1,478 hectares between two river estuaries, the Vellar and the Coleroon. Tamil Nadu Tourism runs rowing boats and motor boats there every day from 9 am to 5 pm, and you can book online.

Pichavaram is a full day out rather than a morning trip, so it suits a longer stay. For most visitors, the one-hour ride from Pondicherry gives you the mangrove experience without the long drive.

When is the best time to go?

November to March is the season for Pondicherry, as the official tourism guidance recommends. The weather is cooler and the days are clear. Within the day, go early: the channels are at their most peaceful in the morning, and you avoid the midday heat on the water.

During the monsoon months the weather can be unsettled, which is exactly why the operator offers a free reschedule for weather. If rain is forecast, move your trip rather than sit through a wet ride.

How do you make a day of it?

The mangrove ride is short, so pair it with something else in town.

  • Early morning: the mangrove boat ride from Uppalam.
  • Late morning: the Puducherry Museum, which displays artefacts excavated at Arikamedu, so you can see what came out of the riverbank you just passed. It's open 10 am to 5 pm and closed on Mondays.
  • Lunch: in White Town, then out of the midday sun.
  • Afternoon: Paradise Beach by boat from Chunnambar, if you still have the energy. The standard boat costs ₹300 per adult and ₹150 per child. Read our Paradise Beach guide before you go.
  • Evening: back to the villa and the pool.
