It's a little before midnight on Christmas Eve, and the old churches of Pondicherry are full. Doors open to the warm night, candles, hymns in Tamil, French and English drifting out into the street. A week later the same town is shouting down the seconds to midnight on Beach Road, sparklers in the air. And the morning after that, on the quiet coast north of town where Wind & Wave sits, the first sunrise of the year comes up out of the sea.
December may be the most atmospheric month to be in Pondicherry. It's also the one people plan worst, because it looks like winter on the calendar and still behaves like the monsoon in the sky.
Here's what the weather actually does, what Christmas and New Year are really like, and how to plan a December trip that works even when it rains.
Before you go
- Weather: the coolest days of the year, with average highs around 30°C and lows around 21°C.
- Rain: still the monsoon. December averages about 248 mm of rain over roughly six rainy days.
- Christmas: midnight Mass in churches across the town, with prayers in Tamil, French and English.
- New Year's Eve: big crowds on Beach Road, heavy police presence, and at the last New Year the beach itself was kept off-limits.
- 5 December: Sri Aurobindo's Mahasamadhi Day, an important date for the Ashram.
- Book early for the Christmas to New Year week.
What is the weather like in Pondicherry in December?
According to the India Meteorological Department's long-term averages for Puducherry (1991 to 2020), December has the lowest average daytime temperature of the year: highs of around 30°C, with lows around 21°C. Mornings and evenings are genuinely pleasant.
But December is still inside the northeast monsoon. It averages about 248 mm of rain, spread over roughly six rainy days. That's much less than November, the wettest month of the year, with about 347 mm over roughly eleven days. And it's a world away from January, which averages under 20 mm.
So think of December as a month of good days with some very wet ones mixed in. You will probably see rain. You may lose a day to it. Plan for that and it won't spoil anything.
One more thing to know: this is also the season when cyclones in the Bay of Bengal can reach this coast. In late November 2024, Cyclone Fengal crossed the coast close to Puducherry. If a storm is forecast, follow the official warnings, stay off the beach and keep your plans loose. It's also why we keep generator power backup at Wind & Wave: December is when you're most glad of it.
Is December a good time to visit Pondicherry?
Yes, if you want atmosphere and cooler days and can live with some rain. December sits inside the November to March window that official tourism guidance recommends, and it has the Christmas and New Year celebrations on top.
It's less ideal if your trip hinges on a single outdoor plan on a fixed day. The Matrimandir in Auroville closes to visitors on rainy days, and the sea can be rough in the monsoon. Build in a spare day and you'll be fine.
How is Christmas celebrated in Pondicherry?
With real devotion, and its old churches are the heart of it. In recent years, churches across the town have held special midnight Masses on Christmas Eve, drawing thousands of worshippers along with tourists.

- Immaculate Conception Cathedral has drawn large crowds for its Christmas prayers, with the statue of the infant Jesus placed in the crib after the service.
- Notre Dame des Anges (the Church of Our Lady of Angels) holds its Christmas prayers in Tamil, French and English, and has drawn many foreign visitors and tourists. The statue of the infant Jesus is carried in procession before being placed in the crib.
- The Basilica of the Sacred Heart, the red-and-white Gothic church restored after the 1948 cyclone, is worth seeing over the Christmas season too.
Check service times with the church locally a day or two ahead. Arrive early, dress modestly, and remember that these are services, not performances. Visitors are welcome, but the pews belong to the parish first.
What happens on New Year's Eve in Pondicherry?
The town turns out. To welcome 2026, a big crowd, including many tourists from neighbouring states, gathered on Beach Road along the seafront. There was a heavy police presence, barricades at several points to stop vehicles reaching the seashore, and wooden poles to keep people off the beach itself. At midnight the crowd cheered in the new year with crackers and sparklers, while hotels and restaurants held their own programmes.
What that means for you:
- Expect crowds on the seafront, not celebrations on the sand. The Promenade is for standing and cheering, and at the last New Year the sand itself was closed off.
- Don't plan to drive to the front. Vehicles have been kept away from the seashore. Arrange how you'll get in and, just as important, how you'll get home.
- If you'd rather be indoors, hotels and restaurants have run their own New Year programmes. Book ahead.
There's another way to do it, and it's the one we'd pick. Celebrate with your own people at your own table, then set an alarm. The coast faces east, so on 1 January the first sunrise of the year comes straight up out of the Bay of Bengal. From Wind & Wave, that's a 700 m walk to the sand.
What else is there to do in Pondicherry in December?

- Visit the Sri Aurobindo Ashram. Open to all from 8 to 11.30 am and 2 to 6 pm. 5 December marks Sri Aurobindo's Mahasamadhi Day, the anniversary of his passing in 1950, so if you visit around that date, go quietly and respectfully.
- See the Matrimandir from the Viewing Point. Free, no booking, from 9 am. Go on a dry morning. If you want to go inside the Inner Chamber, book online 3 to 5 days ahead, and remember it's closed on Sundays, Tuesdays and rainy days.
- Keep a museum for a wet afternoon. The Puducherry Museum is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10 am to 5 pm, with Chola bronzes and French colonial rooms.
- Take the boat to Paradise Beach on a calm, dry day. A standard boat from Chunnambar costs ₹300 per adult and ₹150 per child. Check conditions first; there are no refunds.
- Walk the Promenade in the cool of the evening, before the New Year crowds arrive.
How does December compare with November and January?
- November: the wettest month of the year, around eleven rainy days on average. Green and cool, but the riskiest month for your plans.
- December: the coolest days, fewer rainy days than November (about six against eleven), and the festive season.
- January: the dry season arrives. About one rainy day on average and the coolest nights of the year. The easiest month for sightseeing, without the Christmas buzz.
If the festivals matter to you, come in December. If you just want dry weather, January is the safer bet.
Where to stay in Pondicherry in December
December asks three things of a place to stay. It has to be good to be in when it rains. It has to get you to the sunrise. And, over Christmas and New Year, it has to be somewhere you can actually hear yourself think.
Wind & Wave Villas ticks all three. It's a quiet, gated coastal community at Chettikuppam, north of Pondicherry, with the beach a 700 m walk from the gate. Pondicherry town and Auroville are each about 30 minutes' drive away, close enough for midnight Mass or the countdown, far enough to sleep afterwards.
- For rainy days: generator power backup, air conditioning, ceiling fans and Wi-Fi, and kitchens in seven of the stays.
- For Christmas dinner and New Year's Eve: an outdoor dining area in most stays, and space for the whole group.
- For groups and families: five 3BHK villas with their own private pool, each sleeping up to 10, and two-bedroom rooms that sleep 6. See group and family stays.
- For the drive in: free parking on the premises.

Frequently asked questions
What is the temperature in Pondicherry in December?
Long-term averages from the India Meteorological Department put December highs at around 30°C and lows at around 21°C. It has the coolest days of the year.
When should you not visit Pondicherry?
Avoid May and June if you dislike heat, when average highs are around 37°C. Avoid October and November if you dislike rain; they're the wettest months, with around eleven rainy days each on average.
Is 2 days sufficient for Pondicherry?
Yes, for the essentials: one day for the old town and one for Auroville. In December, add a spare day in case rain washes one out.
Is Pondicherry better than Goa for December?
It's quieter. Puducherry's tourism department says visitors expecting a Goa-like place may be disappointed, because it doesn't have Goa's commercial tourist infrastructure. Choose Pondicherry for heritage, Christmas services and calm; choose elsewhere if you want a lively resort strip.
Which place is best for December?
If you want a warm, cultural break with Christmas atmosphere and cooler days, Pondicherry is a strong choice, as long as you accept some rain. Stay on the coast and you get quiet nights and sunrise over the sea as well.
Can you swim at Pondicherry beaches in December?
Be cautious. December is still monsoon season, and the sea can be rough. The Promenade is rocky and not for swimming at all. Watch the water, stay in your depth, and stay out entirely when it's rough or a storm is forecast.
