Le Pondy is one of the best known resort names around Pondicherry. It sits at Pudukuppam, south of the town on Lake View Road, on a strip of land between a backwater lake and the sea, close to Paradise Beach. It is large, polished and busy with weddings and events for much of the year.
Our villas sit at the other end of the map and the other end of the scale. Wind & Wave is a gated beach property at Chettikuppam, on the quiet coast between Marakkanam and Pondicherry, made up of villas and stays rather than hotel rooms. Several of them have a swimming pool that belongs to that villa alone.
Both are good places to spend a few days by the sea. They simply suit different trips, so we have set them side by side using what each one says about itself, with no scores and no ranking.
What does Le Pondy offer?
Le Pondy is a full service resort. Its setting is the big draw: water on two sides, with the lake behind and the sea in front, and private access to the beach. Some rooms look out over the lake, and the grounds take in lawns and a pond as well as the swimming pool.
Alongside rooms it offers villa stays, a spa and its own dining, so you can arrive, park the car and not think about meals or plans again until you leave. It is also a major wedding and event venue, with spaces built for receptions and large gatherings. If you are planning a function with catering, decor and staff handled in one place, that is a real strength.
The flip side of a large, popular resort is that you share it. The pool, the lawns and the dining are used by every guest, and on a wedding weekend the property can be lively well into the evening.
What do our villas offer?
We are a gated coastal property in a quiet community, built around villas rather than rooms. The headline stays are five 3BHK villas, Villas 15 to 19, each with its own private swimming pool, three bedrooms, three bathrooms, five queen beds and two living rooms that look onto the pool. Each sleeps up to 10 guests and has a kitchen, a dedicated workspace and a projector or home theatre.
There are also eight 2BHK Luxury Stays for up to 6 guests, with a home theatre and a common pool, and 2BHK villas 09 to 14 for up to 4 guests, also sharing a pool. Villa No 2 has a sea facing terrace and sleeps up to 8, and both Villa No 2 and Villa No 5 welcome pets.
Every unit has air conditioning and fans, generator backup, wifi and an outdoor shower. Parking is free inside the gate and check-in is self service. Food can be arranged, but there is no restaurant on site and no spa, so if those matter to you, keep reading.
How do the locations compare for getting around?
Le Pondy is south of the town, close to Paradise Beach and the Chunnambar backwaters, which makes the boat ride out to the sandbank an easy morning trip. Our Paradise Beach guide covers that outing.
We are north of the town, on the stretch between Marakkanam and Pondicherry where the villages thin out and the beaches are quiet. Pondicherry town and Auroville are each about a 30 minute drive, so the French Quarter cafes in the evening and Auroville in the morning both work from here. If you are coming down from Chennai, you also reach us before you reach the town.

Pools and privacy: how do they compare?
This is the clearest difference between the two. At Le Pondy the pool is a resort pool, shared with every other guest. That suits people who enjoy the buzz of a resort, but it means sharing loungers in season and keeping to resort hours.
In our 3BHK villas the pool is yours. Nobody else swims in it, so you can take an early dip before breakfast, let the children splash for hours or swim late under the stars after a film in the home theatre. The living rooms open onto it, so parents can watch the water while sitting indoors. Our other stays share a pool between a small number of units, which is still a far quieter pool than a large resort's.

Families, groups and couples: which suits whom?
Choose Le Pondy if you want a spa, a restaurant on site and staff to handle everything, or if you are hosting a wedding or event and want the venue, food and rooms in one booking. Couples who want to be pampered for a weekend will probably be happier there, and that is fair to say plainly.
Choose our villas if you are a family or a group who would rather have a house than a room. Ten people in one 3BHK villa share a kitchen, two living rooms and a private pool, instead of being spread across separate rooms down a corridor.
