Pondicherry shopping: the markets, the boutiques and what to bring home

A fish market at dawn, a street-long bazaar on Sundays, and quiet boutiques full of things made down the road. What to buy, and where to find it.

Facts checked 5 October 2026

Take home what Pondicherry makes. The Government of Puducherry's tourism page names leather, pottery, aromatics, fashion and handmade paper as the town's own brands, on top of an older tradition of doll-making, textiles and silks. Add Auroville's incense and tableware and a string of jasmine for the drive, and you have the list.

Finding it means two very different kinds of shopping. Goubert Market, the covered central bazaar, is fish, vegetables and flowers, loud and wet underfoot. Ten minutes towards the sea, the French quarter goes quiet and pastel, and its boutiques sell paper, leather, pottery and candles made in workshops just outside town.

Bargain in the first, expect fixed prices in the second, and keep a Sunday free for the street bazaar on MG Road.

What is Goubert Market, and when should you go?

Goubert Market is Pondicherry's big central market, also known as the Grand Bazaar, a covered warren of fish, vegetable, fruit and flower stalls just inland from the old French quarter. Go early in the morning, when it is busiest, coolest and freshest.

This is a working market where the town buys its dinner, not a souvenir arcade, and that is the whole point. Come for the colour, the noise, and the jasmine, and buy a string of flowers on your way out.

Wear closed shoes, since the floors near the fish section are wet. Keep your bag in front of you in the narrow lanes, carry small notes, and ask before you photograph a stallholder. Most will say yes.

When and where is the Sunday market in Pondicherry?

The Sunday market is held every Sunday along Mahatma Gandhi Road (MG Road) in the middle of Pondicherry town. The Puducherry Police describe it as a traditional Sunday bazaar where large numbers of people gather to shop.

Think of it as a street-long flea market. Vendors lay out clothes, shoes, household goods, old books, toys and small electronics along the road, and the crowd thickens through the day. It is cheap, loud and sometimes chaotic, which is half the fun.

Come on foot or by auto rickshaw rather than by car, as the road fills with stalls and shoppers. Go in the morning for space to move, carry cash in small notes, and bargain politely. If you are driving in from outside town, park well away and walk the last stretch. Our guide to getting around Pondicherry covers autos, cabs and scooters.

What should you buy in Pondicherry?

The best things to buy in Pondicherry are the things made here: handmade paper, leather, pottery, aromatics such as incense and candles, textiles, and the handicrafts made in Auroville. The Government of Puducherry's tourism page names leather, pottery, aromatics, fashion and handmade paper as the town's standout products.

The same page notes Pondicherry's long tradition of doll-making, textiles and silks, and a newer trend of decor boutiques and export-quality antique furniture galleries. Embroidery is another local craft: the tourism department's French heritage walk passes the Hotel Lagrenee de Meziere, home to the sisters of Cluny, where you can watch embroidery being made.

  • Handmade paper: notebooks, lampshades and gift wrap.
  • Leather: bags, sandals and bound journals.
  • Pottery and ceramics: tableware made in workshops around town.
  • Aromatics: incense, essential oils and scented candles.
  • Textiles and embroidery: cotton clothing, silks and Cluny embroidery.
  • Auroville products: clothing, tableware, jewellery, furnishings and organic food.

Where can you buy Auroville products?

The easiest place to buy Auroville products is the Auroville Visitors Centre, where three boutiques, La Boutique d'Auroville, Mirra Boutique and Kalki Boutique, are open daily from 9.30 am to 6 pm. Auroville says they sell incense, clothing, tableware, jewellery, furnishings and aromatherapy, along with herbal syrups, dried fruit and cereal products made in Auroville.

The Visitors Centre also has the Auroville Papers bookshop and the Seagull bookshop. If you are not going out to Auroville, La Boutique d'Auroville and Kalki Boutique both have branches in Pondicherry town, and Auroville Papers lists the La Boutique d'Auroville branch on Jawaharlal Nehru Street as an outlet for its paper.

Which streets are best for shopping in Pondicherry?

For clothes, go to Jawaharlal Nehru Street, which the tourism department names as the main street for clothing shops. For boutiques, decor and crafts, wander the quieter streets of the French quarter and the area around the Aurobindo Ashram.

The tourism department's Ashram walk passes shops selling goods made by the Ashram's own units, including Auroshika, La Tienda, Auroshree and the Vak bookshop, as well as La Boutique d'Auroville. Anna Salai is the street for electronics. Our French Quarter walking guide maps the heritage streets, and you can break for coffee with our list of cafés to visit in Pondicherry.

Where is the best place to stay for a shopping trip to Pondicherry?

The best place to stay for a shopping trip to Pondicherry is Wind & Wave Villas, at Chettikuppam on the coast north of town, about a 30-minute drive from both Pondicherry and Auroville. That matters on a shopping day: Goubert Market in the morning, the Auroville boutiques after lunch, and free parking on the premises so the paper, pottery and jasmine ride home in the boot, not in your arms.

Shopping as a family or a group of friends? The group and family stays include rooms with 2 bedrooms that sleep 6, and the 5 private-pool villas sleep up to 10, so everyone can spread the day's finds across one table and still be in the pool before dark.

Frequently asked questions

What is Pondicherry famous for shopping?

Pondicherry is best known for things made locally. The Government of Puducherry's tourism page names leather, pottery, aromatics, fashion and handmade paper as its standout products, alongside a long tradition of doll-making, textiles and silks. Add Auroville's handicrafts, incense and organic food, and Cluny embroidery from the French quarter, and you have the core of a Pondicherry shopping list.

What are the Sunday market Pondicherry timings?

The Sunday market runs along Mahatma Gandhi Road every Sunday, and only on Sundays. Vendors set up through the morning and trade into the evening, but there are no official published hours, so stall numbers vary. Go in the morning if you want room to move and the best choice, and come on foot or by auto rickshaw, as the road fills with stalls.

What can you buy at Goubert Market?

Goubert Market is Pondicherry's central fresh market, so it is best for fish, vegetables, fruit, flowers and spices rather than souvenirs. It is worth visiting for the scene as much as the shopping: the flower stalls, the morning catch and the noise of a Tamil market. Go early, wear closed shoes, carry small notes, and ask before photographing stallholders.

Where is the best place to buy Auroville products in Pondicherry?

The widest choice is at the Auroville Visitors Centre, where La Boutique d'Auroville, Mirra Boutique and Kalki Boutique are open daily from 9.30 am to 6 pm. If you are staying in town, La Boutique d'Auroville and Kalki Boutique both have branches in Pondicherry, and the La Boutique d'Auroville branch on Jawaharlal Nehru Street stocks Auroville Papers products.

Is shopping in Pondicherry cheaper than in Chennai or Bangalore?

The Government of Puducherry's tourism page says the town is soft on your purse, with taxes low or non-existent, and calls it a favourite shopping destination for the southern metro cities. Prices still vary a lot between a market stall and a boutique, so bargain in the markets, expect fixed prices in the boutiques, and compare before you buy.

Where is the best place to stay for a shopping trip to Pondicherry?

Wind & Wave Villas, at Chettikuppam on the coast north of Pondicherry, is about a 30-minute drive from both Pondicherry town and Auroville, so Goubert Market and the Auroville Visitors Centre boutiques fit into the same day. Free parking on the premises means everything you buy stays in the car until you are back, and the pool is waiting when you are.
