Pottery in Pondicherry: studios, classes and where to buy
Half a century ago, two potters lit a wood kiln on the edge of Pondicherry. Today the town and Auroville are one of India's great centres of studio pottery. Where to see it, learn it and buy a piece to take home.

Pick up a handmade mug in Pondicherry and turn it over. There may be a small stamped mark on the base, and it may have been thrown a few kilometres away, on a wheel under the trees of Auroville, and fired with wood, gas or soda in a kiln the potters run themselves.
Pottery is one of the quiet crafts of this coast. It began in 1971, when Deborah Smith and Ray Meeker founded Golden Bridge Pottery on the outskirts of Pondicherry, and it spread to Auroville through the potters they trained. "Pondicherry pottery" became shorthand for high quality stoneware across India.
You can watch it, try it on a wheel, or simply buy a bowl that will remind you of the trip every morning. Be warned that most studios here are working potteries, not attractions: only a few teach visitors, and nearly all want a message before you turn up.
Why is Pondicherry famous for pottery?
Pondicherry is famous for pottery because Golden Bridge Pottery, founded here in 1971, trained a generation of Indian studio potters, many of whom set up their own workshops in and around Auroville.
Deborah Smith had studied in Japan and brought its approach to glazed stoneware. Ray Meeker built the kilns and later experimented with fired clay buildings. Auroville's own account of the story says the Mother offered them land outside Pondicherry, and that the name came from Sri Aurobindo's poem Savitri.
Their first student to take the craft into Auroville was Angad Vohra, who apprenticed at Golden Bridge from 1975 to 1979 and later founded Mantra Pottery. Many smaller studios followed. Clay on this coast has a longer history too: the Coromandel has been known for terracotta temple horses and votive figures for centuries, and village potters still work alongside the studio potters.
Where can you take a pottery class in Pondicherry or Auroville?

- Sri Ganapathy Pottery, Auroville main road: a family studio that advertises pottery classes from 10 am to 5 pm on its own page. Call +91 98438 48787 to book a slot and confirm the price before you go. This is the easiest option for a first try on the wheel.

Can you visit pottery studios in Auroville?
Yes, but mostly by appointment. Auroville's potteries are working production studios, not attractions, and most ask you to get in touch first rather than turn up.
Mandala Pottery, in the Dana community, is one of Auroville's largest. A team of 11 throws, glazes and fires functional tableware in the forest, and the studio is known for soda firing as well as gas. It says plainly that it does not run workshops or internships, but individual visits to buy on site can be arranged by appointment through mandalapottery@gmail.com.
Mantra Pottery, in Kottakarai, makes high fired glazed stoneware for the table and home: mugs, teapots, bowls, plates, planters and incense holders. It sells through its own website, and you can use its contact form to ask about visiting.
Golden Bridge itself describes its production as significantly reduced, with Ray Meeker overseeing student training and artist residencies. Treat it as a place of study rather than a showroom, and write ahead.
Where can you buy Pondicherry and Auroville pottery?
The easiest place to buy is the Auroville Visitors Centre, which Mandala Pottery lists among its stockists. In town, Mandala lists Casablanca and Gallerie Surcouf among its stockists.
If you are in town for a day of browsing, our guide to shopping in Pondicherry covers the main streets and stores. Ask for extra wrapping: stoneware travels well if packed tightly.
Time your trip right and you can meet the potters directly. The Auroville International Potters Market is a twice yearly event open only to practising studio potters and ceramic artists. Its sixth edition was held at the Auroville Visitors Centre from 26 to 28 January 2023. Check Auroville's announcements for the next dates.
- Look for a maker's stamp on the base. It tells you which studio threw the piece.
- Wood fired and soda fired pieces vary from one to the next. That is the point.
- Ask the seller whether a piece is safe for the microwave and dishwasher before you buy.
How should you plan a pottery day near Pondicherry?
Book your class or studio visit for the morning, have lunch in Auroville, and browse the Visitors Centre in the afternoon. Clay work is messy, so wear clothes you do not mind ruining.
Pieces you make in a class usually need drying and firing before you can take them home, which can take days. Ask the studio how long, and whether they can hold or post your work if you leave before it is ready.
Mornings are cooler in the studio. For the rest of the day, our Auroville visitor guide covers the Matrimandir and the Visitors Centre.
