Chidambaram Temple: the Nataraja temple, a day south of Pondicherry

One of the great Shiva temples of South India, 78 km south of Pondicherry. Here is when to go, what to wear and how to make a day of it.

Facts checked 5 October 2026

Bells first, then camphor and jasmine, and bare feet on stone worn smooth by centuries. A hush moves through the crowd, the lamps rise, and in the golden hall you see him: Nataraja, Shiva as the lord of dance, one foot lifted, caught mid-step.

Chidambaram is a temple town in Cuddalore district, and the Nataraja temple at its heart is why people come. The temple spreads across about 50 acres. It is one of the five temples of Shiva linked to the five elements, and here the element is akasha, space.

It is also an easy day south from Pondicherry. Pair it with a row boat through the mangroves at Pichavaram and you have one of the finest days on this coast.

What are the Chidambaram temple timings?

The Chidambaram Nataraja temple is open for darshan from 6 am to 12 noon and again from 5 pm to 10 pm. It is closed through the early afternoon, so plan your visit for the morning or the evening.

Six poojas mark the day. Knowing them helps you choose when to arrive:

  • 6.30 am, Paal Nivedhyam: the Lord's sandals are carried in a palanquin to the sanctum.
  • 7 am, Maha Aarthi, followed by Kalasandhi, the first pooja, from 7.45 am to 9 am.
  • 10 am to 11 am, the second pooja, with the abhishekam of the ruby Nataraja.
  • 11.30 am to 12 noon, Uchikaalam, after which the temple closes.
  • 5.15 pm to 6 pm, Saayarakshai, and 7 pm to 8 pm, the evening pooja that includes the Chidambara Rahasya pooja.
  • Ardhajaamam starts at 9 pm and ends around 10 pm, when the sandals return for the night.

How far is Chidambaram from Pondicherry?

Chidambaram is 78 km south of Pondicherry by road, through Cuddalore. It works well as a day trip by car, and many visitors coming from Chennai pass through Pondicherry on the East Coast Road to get there.

Hire a car with a driver for the day so nobody has to drive back after an evening darshan.

Chidambaram also has its own railway station on the line through Villupuram and Cuddalore, but for a day out from the coast the car is far simpler.

What is the dress code at Chidambaram Natarajar temple?

Dress traditionally and modestly: a dhoti or veshti, or at least long trousers, for men, and a saree, half saree or salwar kameez for women. Shorts, short skirts and sleeveless tops are not appropriate.

This is a living temple managed by its priests, the Podhu Dikshithars, and they decide what is acceptable on the day, especially near the sanctum and during festivals. If in doubt, carry a veshti or a shawl in the car and ask at the entrance before you go in.

Leave shoes in the car or at a footwear stand outside, and be ready to walk barefoot on stone that gets hot by late morning.

What makes the Chidambaram temple special?

Chidambaram is one of the few temples where Shiva is worshipped in human form, as the dancing Nataraja, rather than only as a lingam, and the bejewelled image of Nataraja is its heart. To many Shaivites the word koil, temple, simply means Chidambaram.

The name is often read as chit, consciousness, and ambaram, sky. It fits a temple whose element is space itself, and it is why the Chidambara Rahasya pooja, the secret of Chidambaram, is the moment many pilgrims wait for each evening.

The temple grew under the Cholas, who made Chidambaram their capital and took Nataraja as their family deity, and it has been renovated and extended many times since. It has five halls, or sabhas, among them the Kanaka Sabha, the Cit Sabha and the Nritta Sabha. Vishnu has his own shrine here too, as Govindaraja Perumal, which is rare.

How do you combine Chidambaram with Pichavaram?

Do the temple in the morning, have lunch in town during the afternoon closure, then drive about 30 minutes to Pichavaram for an afternoon boat through the mangroves. TTDC's boats start at 9 am and the boat house lists 4 pm as its closing time, so don't leave it late.

The reverse works too if you prefer the evening darshan: mangroves in the morning, rest in the heat, temple at 5 pm, and a later drive home. Our Pichavaram mangrove forest guide has the boating details. Festivals change the rhythm completely: on Margazhi Thiruvaadhirai and Aani Thirumanjanam the town fills with hundreds of thousands of pilgrims, so plan around them unless the festival is why you're going.

Where is the best place to stay for a Chidambaram temple visit?

The best place to stay for a Chidambaram temple day is Wind & Wave Villas, a quiet gated coastal community at Chettikuppam, north of Pondicherry, from where the drive south follows the coast through Cuddalore.

A temple day starts before sunrise and, if you stay for the evening darshan, ends late. Self check-in means nobody waits up at a reception desk, and the car stands in free parking until you need it. Kitchens in 7 of the stays let you make a simple vegetarian breakfast before you leave. Families and pilgrim groups who travel together often take one of the 3-bedroom private pool villas, which sleep up to 10 under one roof.
