Pichavaram Mangrove Forest: a day trip south from Pondicherry

The largest mangrove backwater on this coast, seen from a wooden row boat, with the boating, the drive and the day planned out.

Facts checked 5 October 2026

Noon on the open water is white and hot. Then the boatman turns into a side canal, the oar knocks once against the hull, and he ducks, so you do too. The channel has shrunk to the width of the boat, roots arch out of the water like the ribs of something very old, and the midday sun comes through the leaves in coins.

This is Pichavaram, in Cuddalore district, on the coast south of Pondicherry. Most people know it from the boat sequence in the Tamil film Dasavathaaram. What they don't expect is how quiet it is once the motor boats are behind you and the canals close in.

It is a full day out, not a quick ride. Boats run from 9 am, the great temple at Chidambaram is about 30 minutes away on the same road, and the two together make one of the best days on this coast.

How far is Pichavaram from Pondicherry?

Pichavaram lies just beyond Chidambaram, which is 78 km south of Pondicherry, and the mangroves are about a 30-minute drive on from the temple town. Allow a full day for the round trip, with the boating and a temple visit included.

The drive runs south through Cuddalore town and on into the flat, green delta country. As you near Chidambaram, the road signs for Pichavaram take you east, back towards the sea, to the TTDC boat house at the edge of the backwater.

The simplest way is a car with a driver for the day, so nobody has to drive home tired after the sun.

What are the Pichavaram boating timings and how do you book?

Boating at Pichavaram starts at 9 am every day and is run by TTDC, Tamil Nadu's tourism corporation, with both row boats and motor boats on offer. Book online through the TTDC boat booking portal, or buy at the counter on the day.

The two official sources disagree on the closing time. The Cuddalore district site says 5 pm, while the TTDC booking page lists the Pichavaram boat house as 9 am to 4 pm. Treat 4 pm as the real cut-off and aim to be on the water by mid-morning.

Weekends and long holidays bring queues at the jetty, especially for row boats, which are fewer. A weekday morning booking is the single best thing you can do for this trip. Fares change with the season and the boat type, so check the current rate on the portal when you book.

Row boat or motor boat: which is better at Pichavaram?

Take the row boat if the forest is what you came for. The narrow canals that make Pichavaram special are best taken slowly and quietly, and that is what a row boat does.

The motor boat is quicker and fine for a first look if you're short of time. But the magic is in the small channels, where the roots meet over your head and the only sound is the oar. Ask at the counter which routes each boat covers that day, and tell your boatman you want the narrow canals.

  • Row boat: slower and quieter, the way to drift through the mangrove canals. Best for photographers and anyone who came for the forest itself.
  • Motor boat: faster and larger, good for a big group with little time.
  • Either way: carry cash for small extras, a hat, water and mosquito repellent. There is very little shade on the open stretches.

What will you see in the Pichavaram canals?

You'll see a maze of small islands and waterways where two river estuaries meet the sea, lined with mangroves rooted in shallow, salty water. Water birds work the edges of every channel, and migratory birds join them in the cooler months.

The mangroves here are a working ecosystem, not a park. Fish breed among the roots and the forest takes the force out of storms coming in off the Bay of Bengal. That is why the boatmen stay on set channels and why plastic does not belong on the water.

If you've already done the short backwater ride near town, described in our guide to mangroves near Pondicherry, Pichavaram is the big version: wider, wilder and far more of it.

When is the best time to visit Pichavaram?

November to March is the best time to visit Pichavaram. The air is cooler, the light is soft and the birdlife is at its richest. Within the day, the first boats of the morning are calmest and coolest.

From April the sun on open water becomes punishing by late morning. Heavy northeast monsoon rain late in the year can halt boating for the day. Check the forecast and the TTDC portal before you leave. For the wider picture, read our best time to visit Pondicherry guide.

How do you plan Pichavaram and Chidambaram in one day?

Pair them: the Nataraja temple in Chidambaram is open 6 am to 12 noon and 5 pm to 10 pm, so do the temple in the morning and the boats before the 4 pm cut-off, or the reverse. The two are about 30 minutes apart.

  • Leave at dawn and watch the sun come up over the sea on the drive south.
  • Reach Chidambaram for the morning darshan, well before the temple closes at noon. Our Chidambaram temple guide covers timings and what to wear.
  • Lunch in Chidambaram town, then drive the 30 minutes to the Pichavaram boat house.
  • An hour or two in a row boat in the early afternoon.
  • Drive north again and be back for a swim before dinner.

Where is the best place to stay for a Pichavaram day trip?

The best place to stay for a Pichavaram day trip is Wind & Wave Villas, a quiet gated coastal community at Chettikuppam, north of Pondicherry, where your car or driver parks free on the premises.

A day this long wants a base you can leave in the dark and come back to tired. Kitchens in 7 of the stays mean an early breakfast and flasks of tea packed for the road, and the pool is waiting when you return, salt-crusted and sunburnt from the open water. Families and groups who want to travel in one car can share one of the five 3-bedroom private pool villas, which sleep up to 10. See the stays for groups and families.
