The heart of the French town

Bharathi Park, Pondicherry: the square at the heart of the old town

A green square, a white pavilion and three centuries of government on every side. Bharathi Park is where old Pondicherry gathers its breath.

Facts checked 5 October 2026

In 1862 the French brought clean water to their town by canal from an old tank at Muttirapalaiyam. Local tradition says that tank was built centuries earlier by Aayi, a courtesan in the time of the Vijayanagara king Krishnadevaraya. The white pavilion that honours her, the Aayi Mandapam, stands at the centre of Bharathi Park and is now the symbol of the city.

Under the French the green around it was the Place du Gouvernement, the government square, and a parade ground until the 1940s. Across the lawn stands Lok Niwas, the residence of the Lieutenant Governor, once the palace of the French governors.

The sea is a short walk east. The park is free, shaded and central, which makes it the natural pause on any day in the old town.

What is the history of Bharathi Park?

Bharathi Park began as the Place du Gouvernement, the open square at the centre of the French town. It served as a parade ground until the 1940s and was turned into a public recreation park in 2006.

Its position tells you how important it was. The square sits in the middle of what the French called the Boulevard Town, ringed by the seat of government. The 2006 renovation, carried out with the heritage body INTACH, gave it walking paths, a fence, and four iron gates between ornate masonry pillars, one on each side.

What is the story of the Aayi Mandapam?

The Aayi Mandapam is a white pavilion built by Louis Guerre in 1854 during the Second French Empire to shelter a water fountain. It commemorates the arrival of clean drinking water in the French town.

The legend behind it is the best story in Pondicherry. Aayi was a courtesan in the time of the Vijayanagara king Krishnadevaraya, and local tradition says she built a water tank for the people at Muttirapalaiyam, inland from the coast. A woman remembered not for a palace or a temple, but for water.

Centuries later, in 1862, water was brought to the French town by canal from that same tank. The monument is believed to have been sanctioned by Napoleon III in her honour, and today it is the symbol of the city.

What is Lok Niwas, opposite Bharathi Park?

Lok Niwas, formerly Raj Nivas, is the official residence of the Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry. It stands opposite the park and was once the palace of the French governors.

Governor Dumas laid the foundation of a governor's palace in 1735, but it took the arrival of Dupleix to see it finished. When Law de Lauriston took over in 1765 the town was in ruins, and within three years a new town rose, with the governor's palace on the site of the old Hôtel de la Compagnie.

The building began as a long single-storey structure with porticos, later raised to two storeys. Its southern gate is the official entrance. It is a working government residence, so admire it from the street and do not photograph the guards or the gates without permission.

What can you do at Bharathi Park?

Walk, sit, and watch the town go by. Bharathi Park is a place to slow down between sights, not a sight you rush through.

  • Walk all the way round the Aayi Mandapam; every side frames a different view of the square.
  • Walk a loop of the paths in the early morning with the town's regulars.
  • Use the park as a shaded midpoint between the seafront and the streets of the old town.
  • Combine it with the museums in Pondicherry close by.
  • Finish at the sea: the Rock Beach promenade is a short walk east.

When is the best time to visit Bharathi Park?

Come early in the morning or in the late afternoon. Between November and February the air is cooler and the lawns are at their greenest.

Midday in April, May and June is hard work anywhere in town, even under the trees. Late afternoon light turns the Aayi Mandapam gold, which is the moment for photographs. For the seasons month by month, see the best time to visit Pondicherry.

Where is the best place to stay for Bharathi Park and the old town?

The best place to stay for a day around Bharathi Park is Wind & Wave Villas, a quiet gated community at Chettikuppam on the coast north of Pondicherry, about a 30-minute drive from the old town. Drive in once, park, and see the park, Lok Niwas and the seafront on foot.

Come early with the morning walkers, leave as the midday heat builds, and spend the afternoon by the pool instead of on hot pavements. The park at dusk, when the Aayi Mandapam turns gold, is an easy second trip in. Anyone who wants a place to themselves can choose one of the villas near Pondicherry.
