Churches in Pondicherry: the basilica, the cathedral and the church by the sea
Pondicherry's churches tell the story of the French town better than any museum. Here are the ones worth your morning, and how to visit them well.

How does a small coastal town end up with a Gothic basilica, a cathedral and a Greco-Roman church within walking distance of each other? The answer starts in 1674, when French Capuchins settled in Pondicherry to serve the chapel in the little French fort. Jesuits and the Paris Foreign Missions followed, and over three centuries they built churches that were wrecked by sieges and raised again on the same ground.
The three to see are the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the Immaculate Conception Cathedral and Our Lady of Angels. All are working parish churches in the old town, close enough to see in one unhurried morning, and Mass times change with the season, so check each notice board.
What are the most famous churches in Pondicherry?
The three churches every visitor should see are the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the Immaculate Conception Cathedral and Our Lady of Angels. The Puducherry tourism department lists exactly these three as the town's prominent churches.
Beyond the town, the archdiocese counts the Our Lady of Lourdes shrine at Villianur among its great shrines, and it makes a good short detour inland.
What should you know about the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus?
The Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is the grandest of Pondicherry's churches: a Gothic building 50 metres long, 48 metres wide and 18 metres high, on the southern side of the town. It was blessed in 1907 and dedicated as a basilica in 2011.
Its story starts in 1895, when Archbishop Gandy consecrated the archdiocese to the Sacred Heart, inspired by the devotion at Montmartre in Paris. Fr Telesphore Welter, the parish priest of Nellithope, drew up the plans, and construction began in 1902. The first Mass was held in the western wing on 17 December 1907, and the parish was founded on 27 January 1908.
Seen from above, the church is a Latin cross. Inside, 24 main columns carry the roof, and the windows show 28 saints linked to the devotion to the Sacred Heart. Look at the entrance for the Latin inscription and for the Sacred Heart and Mother Mary carved into the door. The archdiocese notes it is the first basilica in Pondicherry and the sixth in Tamil Nadu.
What is the history of the Immaculate Conception Cathedral?
The Immaculate Conception Cathedral is the mother church of the Archdiocese of Pondicherry and Cuddalore. The Jesuits began the present building in 1770 on the foundations of a church of 1736, and it was completed and dedicated on 7 November 1791.
That gap of twenty years is the history of Pondicherry in miniature. The town was fought over by the French and the British through the eighteenth century, and churches went down with the walls. The tourism department notes that the old Capuchin church, now an orphanage, was one of the very few buildings to survive the British raid of 1761.
Today the cathedral is where the archdiocese holds its great occasions, from the consecration of bishops to the funeral Mass of its cardinal in 2014. Go on a weekday morning for the quietest look inside.
Where is Our Lady of Angels church, and why visit?
Our Lady of Angels, Eglise de Notre Dame des Anges, is the church of the French quarter, built in the Greco-Roman style in 1855. It is a stop on the tourism department's French heritage walk, and the next stop on that walk is the Joan of Arc statue.
The square by the statue is where you may catch Pondicherry's most French habit. The tourism department notes that local players play pétanque at the Joan of Arc statue, and that Pondicherry is the only place in India where the game is played.
The heritage walk that takes in the church covers about 2 km and takes 1 to 1.5 hours, starting and ending at the tourist information centre. Our French Quarter walking guide lays out the streets in detail, and the Rock Beach and Promenade guide covers the sea front a few minutes away.
Which churches near Pondicherry are worth a detour?
Two pilgrim churches just outside town are worth the drive: the Our Lady of Lourdes shrine at Villianur, and the church of Our Lady of Good Health at Ariankuppam.
Villianur is a story in itself. The archdiocese says it was the first shrine built for Our Lady of Lourdes in India. A statue arrived from Lourdes in 1877, and in 1886 the archbishop crowned it and declared the church an official shrine before a crowd of around 40,000 people.
At Ariankuppam, an Armenian bishop built a chapel for Armenian merchants in 1690. The Jesuits replaced it in 1714 with a church dedicated to Our Lady of Good Health, and the archdiocese says it grew into a major pilgrim centre for the Pondicherry region for centuries.
