Chennai to Pondicherry: the ECR drive, bus, train and where to stop

About 160 km of sea, salt pans and casuarina groves. Drive it well and the trip feels like the first morning of your holiday.

Facts checked 5 October 2026

Chennai to Pondicherry is about 160 km, and by road it generally takes about 3 hours. Take the East Coast Road, the ECR, rather than the inland highway. It gives you the sea for most of the way.

Casuarina trees on one side. Salt pans and fishing boats on the other. Now and then, between the trunks, a flash of the Bay of Bengal. Two of the best stops in Tamil Nadu sit right on the road, and the last hour runs through fishing villages and quiet beaches long before the town begins.

How far is Pondicherry from Chennai?

Pondicherry is about 160 km south of Chennai by road. The exact number depends on where in the city you start.

If you are flying in, start your count at the airport instead: Pondicherry is about 135 km from Chennai Airport, around two and a half hours by road. That makes it easy to land in the morning and be by the sea for lunch.

One thing most guides miss: the Pondicherry coast begins well before the town. Coming down the ECR you pass a long run of fishing villages and quiet beaches first, and that is where the drive gets interesting.

What is the best way to go from Chennai to Pondicherry?

For most people the best way is to drive the East Coast Road. You choose when you leave, you can stop where you like, and you have a car for beaches and Auroville once you arrive.

Each option still has its place, and they compare like this.

  • By car: the most flexible. Plan on about 3 hours of road, more if you stop or leave during the city rush.
  • By bus: cheap and frequent. Government and private buses leave Chennai for Pondicherry every 15 to 30 minutes in the day and take about three and a half hours. Confirm the boarding point before you set off.
  • By train: Pondicherry has daily rail links to Chennai. You will not see the sea the way you do from the ECR, but it is a calm option if the timing suits. Check the timetable on IRCTC.
  • By air: not practical. Pondicherry's airport has flights to Bengaluru and Hyderabad, not Chennai.

Is the ECR better than the GST Road route?

If you are driving for pleasure, yes. The ECR keeps you close to the shore, while the inland highway trades the sea for lorries and flyovers.

Much of the ECR is run as a toll road by the state's road development company, so you will pass toll plazas. Rates change, so we will not quote them. Keep FASTag ready and a little cash for tea and tender coconut.

The final stretch between Marakkanam and Pondicherry is a national highway, NH-332A. In August 2025 the Union Cabinet approved widening those 46 km to four lanes. Until that work is done, expect a mostly two-lane road with villages, bikes and the odd herd of goats, so drive it in daylight if you can.

What are the best stops between Chennai and Pondicherry?

Two stops are worth planning around: DakshinaChitra at Muttukadu and the monuments at Mahabalipuram. Both sit right on the ECR, so neither costs you a detour.

DakshinaChitra is a heritage museum of traditional South Indian houses and crafts. It opens at 10 am, closes at 6 pm on weekdays and 7 pm at weekends, and is shut on Tuesdays. Entry for Indian adults is ₹200 on weekdays. Food from outside is not allowed inside the museum.

Further south, the Group of Monuments at Mahabalipuram is a UNESCO World Heritage Site: Pallava rock-cut cave temples, monolithic temples carved from single boulders, and huge bas-relief sculptures, all close together. A couple of hours gives you a good first look. If you want the full morning, our Mahabalipuram guide covers it as an easy day trip back up the coast.
