Water sports in Pondicherry: kayaks, jet skis and what is really on offer
Quiet paddling through mangrove channels, or a jet ski and a banana ride by the river mouth. Here is who runs what, what it costs, and how to stay safe.
Facts checked 5 October 2026
The paddle dips, and the only other sound is a kingfisher landing on a root. The channel is narrow and glassy, walled in by mangrove, and the tide is just high enough to float the kayak over the mud. Ten minutes ago you could hear the town. Now you cannot.
That is one half of water sports in Pondicherry. The other half is louder: jet skis, speed boats and banana rides on the backwaters south of town, near Paradise Beach, where families queue in life jackets and the spray goes everywhere.
Where can you do water sports in Pondicherry?
Water sports in Pondicherry cluster in two places: the mangrove lagoon near the harbour, for kayaking, paddleboarding and sailing, and the backwaters south of town around Paradise Beach and Chunnambar, for jet skis, banana rides and speed boats.
The town's own seafront along the Promenade is a rock wall, not a launch spot, so do not expect to hire a kayak there. Head to the operators below instead.
- Pondy Yacht Club, Harbour Road Extension, Thengaithittu: guided kayak and stand up paddle trips in the lagoon and mangroves, plus sailing.
- Pondy Ocean Park, Cuddalore Road, Thavalakuppam, near Paradise Beach: jet ski, speed boat, banana, donut and other towed rides, kayaks, pedal boats and coracle rides.
- Sandunes Paradise Beach, Pudukuppam: jet ski, speed boat, banana ride and kayaking, plus an inflatable aqua park and paramotoring.
- Pondicherryin Adventure Tours: mangrove kayaking and stand up paddle sessions, booked by WhatsApp.
Where can I go kayaking in Pondicherry?
The best kayaking in Pondicherry is in the mangrove lagoon near the harbour. Pondy Yacht Club runs a guided 1 hour kayak trip there for ₹800 per person, taxes included.
The water is sheltered and flat, which suits beginners, and a guide takes you into the narrow channels between the roots. Pondicherryin Adventure Tours also runs mangrove kayaking, priced at ₹1,000 per person for 60 minutes or ₹1,800 for 120 minutes, and notes that it only works at high tide, so timings shift with the tide table.
For a more casual paddle, Pondy Ocean Park and Sandunes Paradise Beach both list kayaks among their rides. If the mangroves themselves are what interest you, read our mangrove forest guide first.
Can you do stand up paddleboarding in Pondicherry?
Yes. Pondy Yacht Club offers 1 hour guided stand up paddle trips through the lagoon and mangroves for ₹1,770 per person, taxes included, and Pondicherryin Adventure Tours offers board rental, guided sessions and lessons.
Pondicherryin lists board rental at ₹1,000 plus GST for an hour, a guided hour at ₹1,500 plus GST, and a 1.5 hour lesson with a certified instructor at ₹2,500 plus GST. Its sessions run from about 7 am to 9 am, weather permitting.
Where can you do jet skiing, banana rides and parasailing?
Jet skis, banana rides and other towed rides are offered on the backwaters south of town by Pondy Ocean Park and Sandunes Paradise Beach. We could not find a parasailing operator that confirms the activity on its own website, so check on the spot before you plan around it.
Pondy Ocean Park lists jet ski, speed boat, banana, donut, flyfish and sea monster rides, with regular activity hours of 9.30 am to 6.30 pm. Sandunes lists jet ski, speed boat and banana rides alongside its aqua park. Neither publishes ride prices on its activity pages, so ask for the rate and the ride length before you pay.
Sandunes also offers paramotoring, a powered paraglider flight with a pilot, which is the nearest thing to flying over this coast that we could confirm. Pondicherryin lists it at ₹3,500 for about 5 to 10 minutes in the air, in the late afternoon, with a 120 kg weight limit and flights that depend on the wind. The ferry to Paradise Beach itself is covered in our Paradise Beach and Chunnambar guide, and gentler boat rides are in our guide to boating in Pondicherry.
What about surfing and scuba diving?
Pondicherry has a real surf scene and a growing dive scene, and both deserve more space than a paragraph. Surfing happens on the beach breaks north of town, with schools that rent boards and teach beginners. Our surfing in Pondicherry guide covers where, when and who teaches.
Scuba diving goes out by boat to sites off the coast, with try dives for beginners and certification courses for those who want more. Everything you need is in our Pondicherry scuba diving guide.
Are water sports in Pondicherry safe, and when is the season?
Water sports here are reasonably safe with a licensed operator, a life jacket and a calm day. The cooler, drier months are the most reliable season, and operators may stop rides when the wind or rain picks up.
Wear the life jacket for every ride, including kayaks and pedal boats. Tell the operator if you cannot swim. Skip motorised rides after a heavy meal, keep children within reach, and do not let anyone talk you into a ride in rough water. Mangrove trips depend on the tide, so confirm the time the evening before. For the wider weather picture, see the best time to visit Pondicherry.
Where is the best place to stay for water sports near Pondicherry?
The best place to stay for water sports near Pondicherry is Wind & Wave Villas, at Chettikuppam on the coast north of town, about a 30-minute drive from Pondicherry. Mangrove kayaking runs early with the tide, so you drive in before breakfast, paddle while the water is still, and have the whole afternoon free.
A group that has just done the banana ride together fits in one of the 5 three-bedroom villas with a private pool, sleeping up to 10; see our stays for groups and families. Kitchens in 7 stays let you cook lunch instead of hunting for a table, and the quiet, gated coastal community is a long way from the jet ski engines.
