Hyderabad to Pondicherry: the long weekend, done properly

A daily direct flight now puts Pondicherry within a working Friday of Hyderabad. How to use it, what to do when it is full, and when the train makes more sense.

Facts checked 5 October 2026

Hyderabad is rock, dry heat and a plateau hundreds of kilometres from any sea. Pondicherry is flat, wet and salty, a town where the sun comes up out of the Bay of Bengal. Under two hours in a small plane gets you from one to the other.

For years the only sensible way was to fly to Chennai and drive down the coast. Since December 2024 IndiGo has flown daily direct into Puducherry itself, which turns a three day break into something you can actually take. When that flight is full, Chennai, the overnight train and the bus are still there.

Is there a direct flight from Hyderabad to Pondicherry?

Yes. IndiGo flies daily direct between Hyderabad and Puducherry, a route it started on 20 December 2024 when Puducherry became its 89th domestic destination. It is the fastest way to make the trip, door to sea.

There is one flight a day in each direction, so seats go quickly on long weekends and during the November to March season. The departure time has moved around since launch, so check the current schedule on IndiGo's own site before you plan your Friday. Fares are dynamic and climb sharply as the date approaches.

Puducherry's airport is small and handles only a few flights a day, so it is quick to get through. Arrange your cab before you fly rather than hoping for one at the kerb.

What if the direct flight is full? Fly to Chennai

If the Puducherry flight is sold out or badly timed, fly into Chennai instead. Chennai has many more flights from Hyderabad across the day, so you can leave after work or on the first plane out.

From Chennai airport it is roughly 160 km south to Pondicherry. You can take a pre-booked cab straight down the coast, or go by train or bus from the city if you are travelling light. Allow for Chennai traffic at the start; once you are clear of the city the road settles down.

One small advantage of this route if you are staying with us: Wind & Wave sits on the coast north of Pondicherry, between Marakkanam and the town, so coming from Chennai you reach it before you reach the traffic of Pondicherry itself.

Is there a train from Hyderabad to Pondicherry?

Yes. The Kacheguda to Puducherry Express runs three days a week from Kacheguda station in Hyderabad and arrives in Puducherry the next morning. It is the only direct train on this route.

It is a long overnight journey, so it suits people with a full week rather than a long weekend. The upside is that you sleep through most of it and wake up close to the coast. Running days have been revised before, so confirm them on IRCTC or the National Train Enquiry System when you book.

If the direct train is full, the usual workaround is an overnight train to Chennai and then the short run to Puducherry, where daily trains connect from Chennai and Villupuram.

How far is Pondicherry from Hyderabad by road?

Pondicherry is about 784 km from Hyderabad by road. That is a full day of driving, or an overnight bus.

Overnight luxury buses run between Pondicherry and Hyderabad, and they are a reasonable choice if flights are expensive. If you drive yourself, split it into two days and keep your FASTag topped up for the national highway tolls. Arrive in daylight; the last stretch on smaller coastal roads is easier when you can see it.

Driving does give you one thing a flight cannot: a car for the weekend, for the beaches, Auroville and the town.

How to plan a weekend trip from Hyderabad to Pondicherry

Three nights is the sweet spot. Fly in on Friday, keep Saturday and Sunday for the coast and the town, and fly back on Monday.

  • Day one: land, check in, and walk to the beach before dark. The coast faces east, so save the big moment for the next morning's sunrise.
  • Day two: drive into town for the French Quarter walk in the early cool, then lunch from our guide to where to eat.
  • Day three: Auroville and the Matrimandir viewing point. Read our Auroville visitor guide first, because the inner chamber needs advance booking and closes on Sundays and Tuesdays.
  • Day four: one last sunrise, a slow breakfast, then the airport.

Where is the best place to stay for a trip from Hyderabad?

The best place to stay for a trip from Hyderabad is Wind & Wave Villas, inside a quiet, gated coastal community at Chettikuppam, north of Pondicherry, a 700 m walk from the beach.

You have flown in for three days, so the coast should start the moment you arrive. Self check-in means a delayed flight is no problem, and the first evening is a walk to the sea rather than a queue at a front desk. If you came the Chennai way, you reach the gate before the town's traffic. A group of friends or two families can share one of the 3BHK villas with a private pool, which sleep up to 10, and the French Quarter and Auroville are each about a 30-minute drive for the days you plan above.
