Tirupati to Pondicherry: from the hills to the sea
Darshan at Tirumala, then a few days of salt air. This is how to make the journey down to the coast without wearing yourself out.
Facts checked 5 October 2026
Evening, after darshan. The bus swings down the ghat road through bend after bend, the queue and the prayers behind you, until the lights of Tirupati spread out below. Your feet ache. Your mind is quiet. And a few hours south, the Bay of Bengal is waiting.
Many families who travel to Tirumala now add the coast to the same trip. Pondicherry is about 300 km away by the Chennai route, close enough to reach in a day, and there is a daily train. After the effort of darshan, a few slow mornings by the sea feel earned.
What is the distance from Tirupati to Pondicherry?
Going by way of Chennai, Tirupati to Pondicherry is about 300 km: 134 km from Tirupati to Chennai, then roughly 160 km south along the coast. Inland routes through Tamil Nadu are also used by buses and taxis, so the exact distance depends on the road your driver picks.
By road it is a long half day once you allow for town traffic at both ends and a meal stop. By train it takes most of a morning.
Plan for that. If you have done the climb or a late darshan, do not schedule the journey for the same night. Sleep in Tirupati, leave fresh, and arrive on the coast with the afternoon still ahead of you.
Is there a train from Tirupati to Pondicherry?
Yes, there is a daily train. Train 16111, the Tirupati to Puducherry MEMU Express, leaves in the early hours of the morning and reaches Puducherry later the same day. It is an unreserved train, so you buy a general ticket and find a seat.
Since late December 2024, Southern Railway has started this train from Renigunta Junction rather than Tirupati because of operational limits at Tirupati station, with departure from Renigunta at 4.40 am. Renigunta is close to Tirupati, so take an auto or cab there the night before or very early. Patterns like this change, so check the train on the National Train Enquiry System before you go.
A few longer distance express trains to Puducherry also pass through the Tirupati area on certain days of the week with reserved berths. Search IRCTC for Tirupati or Renigunta to Puducherry on your date to see what runs.
Tirupati to Pondicherry by bus: APSRTC and TNSTC
Both state transport corporations serve this route. APSRTC runs buses from Tirupati to cities across neighbouring Tamil Nadu, and TNSTC's Villupuram corporation serves Puducherry and the districts around it.
Book state buses on the official APSRTC and TNSTC websites rather than taking a price from a resale site. Timings and fares change with the season and with festivals at Tirumala, when demand is heavy.
If there is no direct bus that suits you, a reliable fallback is a bus to Chennai and then one of the many buses south to Pondicherry. It adds a change but gives you far more departures.
Driving from Tirupati to Pondicherry with family
A car or hired taxi is the easiest way for a family with elders, children or luggage. You leave when you are ready, stop when someone needs to, and get dropped at the door.
Carry a working FASTag for the tolls and leave Tirupati early to avoid the heat of the afternoon. If you are driving yourself after darshan, be honest about how tired you are; it is a long road and the last part runs on busier town roads.
Having your own car also helps once you arrive, for the town, Auroville and the temples nearby.
Combining Tirumala darshan with a coastal break
The trip works best in one direction: temple first, sea second. You finish the part that needs planning and early starts, and you end on the restful part.
- In Tirupati, use the free APSRTC bus from the railway station to Alipiri if you plan to walk up, and the regular APSRTC buses that run on the two ghat roads to Tirumala if you are not walking.
